be inspired by your environment

"Our back garden is bordered by a variety of magnificent trees. That was one of the things that attracted us to this house. They provide a soft dappled shade for our back yard and for the back of our house. We have a peach and pear tree, tall gums, flowering deciduous trees and a huge camellia bush. They attract native bird life - parrots and honeyeaters. The trees are well established and provide a sense of tranquility and privacy. We just love them!"

When we designed this extension, which doubled the size of the original house, we kept the back as open as possible to the trees. A simple structure was designed, with a high raked roof running from the original part of the house to a glass atrium that is positioned amidst the surrounding trees. The panels of glass are large to maximise the natural leafy views, uninterrupted by the minimalist vertical framework. The effect is quite stunning.

Inside, the living, dining and kitchen area is open plan. The outdoors are brought further inside by a set of double french doors that open from the living area to a Tuscan-inspired court yard.

Just as important as what you do see is what you don't see. The window seat under the atrium also doubles as valuable storage space. And it is a favourite place for an afternoon nap! To save even more space, the laundry is hidden behind flush bi-folding doors at one end of the kitchen.

"The whole space works really well. We are extremely happy with the result."
