A lot of people ask me how they can make the most of their property for minimal cost. If you are happy with the structure and lay-out of your house, you can update it easily with a coat of paint. And what a difference a coat of paint can make! It really does provide an instant transformation. A new colour scheme can provide maximum impact for minimal cost. Be it a feature wall, a whole room or a total make-over! White and neutrals (and there are hundreds of shades) are great for a crisp look and certainly add freshness. But I would like to encourage people to be more adventurous with their use of colour. There is a tremendous palate of colours available. From light lime washes to plush reds to luscious oranges and lemons. And the texture of paint finishes has come a long way too. Everything from the usual matt and gloss to suede and even sophisticated metallic finishes. Choosing colour is sooo much fun. I find that some people are unnecessarily daunted by it. They really needn't be. Sample pots are a great way to put up some ideas and live with them for a while before taking the plunge and painting a whole room - or even a whole wall! The best approach to what may seem an infinite colour choice is to consider the area to be painted and its desired look, feel and function. Should it be fresh and breezy? Modern and crisp? Bold and bright? Rich and deep? Do you want the space to help you relax? Entertain? Work? Or rest? Recognise the fixed surfaces and favourite items that will need to be enhanced by your new colour scheme. Decide whether you want to enhance them by using similar tones or by creating contrast. (A bit of both usually works well). Also decide what parts of your room you want to emphasise and the parts you want to subdue. You may highlight special details with a more detailed colour treatment. Of course, personal preferences will always be important. Above all, be brave and enjoy the process! If you need a little guidance, feel free to contact us at any time. Happy painting!
